Kommersant (Moscow), March 22, 2004
Entrepreneurs climbed on Davos roof.
The ninth international conference "Russia's investment outlooks" organized by RBC was held in the Swiss city of Davos. Within the framework of the conference high-ranking guests of the Swiss Alps visited a reception of producers of Ararat cognac in a restaurant high in the mountains, a party from Chivas Regal suppliers in a nightclub and several dinners. Kommersant reporter Alena Antonova joined them. "So, I am going along a corridor in the Kremlin looking for the nearest toilet. And it turns out that there is only one there, in the presidential zone. Can you imagine the reaction of officers of the administration when they saw me walking along the Kremlin's corridors," Echo of Moscow chief editor Alexey Venediktov was telling his neighbors at a table while calmly eating fondue. "What are you talking about? There is a toilet nearer, right at the library," Alexey Volin, the president of the publishing house Radionov, responded. As the ex-deputy head of the Russian government office Mr. Volin knows the layout of the Kremlin's corridors. Such dialogues could be heard in lobby bars of hotels, in restaurants, cafes and at a local disco. Participants of the conference were having an active rest from discussions about what investors should expect from the government and legislators. A welcome dinner was held in a restaurant with the extravagant name Extrablat on Wednesday, March 16. It should be noted that this dinner was the most restrained and conservative, since the atmosphere of leisure of domestic entrepreneurs became more and more liberated at further evenings. The name Extrablat was keenly discussed at dinner, other topics were considered in the form of formal meetings. Guests, among them were Moscow City Duma deputy Ivan Novitsky, Wimm Bill Dann president David Yakobashvili, Russian presidential administration chief advisor Vladimir Shemyakin, Swiss-Russian business association deputy general director Sergey Sanders, Image Contact agency president Alexey Sitnikov, State Duma deputy Vladimir Tarachev and all RBC top managers headed by Yury Rovensky, sat formally at tables drinking and eating pretty moderately. The next evening, guests were loaded into ski lift cabins and delivered to a height of 2,600 meters (the conference hall and the hotel are situated at the height of 1,300 meters) to the Jakobshorn Panorama restaurant, which is called Davos's roof by locals. Here, with the help of Ararat cognac, which was offered to be tasted at an open observation platform with fire touches, guests started loosening their ties and even danced a bit at the initiative of brewer Oleg Tinkov and lawyer Natalia Barshchevskaya. Flushed of frost (it was chilly on the platform of Davos's roof, about 5 degrees below zero) compatriots discussed enthusiastically the attractiveness of these or those financial instruments and court decisions of "the fairest Bassmany Court in the world". The most restrained guest was Mr. Gerashchenko who left the table and danced only once, though he had had some cognac. From Jakobshorn Panorama some guests went to the nightclub Cabana Club. Brewer Oleg Tinkov set the pace here. He purchased several bottles of Moet & Chardon, put them on a bar, served and even poured it on guests. "We can serve not just beer, the main thing is not to show off," Mr. Tinkov declared, and told ladies and gentlemen loosen up and lured Russian businesswomen to dance floor with a sparkling beverage. Aton Capital Group general director Alexander Kandel and vice president Vladislav Vershinin, Musa Motors head Boris Teterev, KPMG Russia director Dmitry Shirshov, partners of Barshchevsky and Partners Artur Basistov and Alexey Shvachkin, Gallery Group president Anatoly Mostovoy joined Mr. Tinkov dancing and pausing for whisky and Champaign. 30 minutes later, when no Champagne remained that was bought by Oleg Tinkov, Head of Iventika, Sergey Kolushev, who is the organizer of the Russian Economic Forum in London, followed his example and bought more Moet & Chandon. On Friday morning, many guests, including night club visitors, were curling, pushing stone weights with special sticks that looked like mops. In the evening, almost all participants of the conference, even Viktor Gerashchenko, went to Cabana Club once again. Mr. Gerashchenko was sitting in a separate hall. This time it was an official party arranged by Chivas Regal. The host of the evening was Pernaud Richard Marketing Director Vadim Grigorian. General Director of the Makc insurance company Nadezhda Martyanova, Editor-in-Chief of the Profil magazine Vladimir Zmeyushchenko, TV host Boris Notkin and several foreign businessmen joined them. No one was pouring Champagne on the ladies this time. RBC head Yury Rovensky loosened his tie and took his jacket off only after three o'clock in the morning. Sightseeing and a gala dinner were scheduled for Saturday. Some of the guests left for the Zurich and Geneva airports and went home on the same day, some waited until Sunday. Former General Prosecutor of Russia Yury Skuratov could be found in the economy class on board an Aeroflot plane. He looked sad watching his happy countrymen having active discussions of the parties, and drinking whisky.
