Noviye Izvestia - December 14, 2004

Business needs recognition

The 6th awarding ceremony for the laureates of the Company of the Year-2004 national business award was held in the Moscow Music House on December 8. The founder of the award is RIA RosBusinessConsulting.

The award is given to Russia's leading businesses. A success is impossible without achieving a modern level of business management, administration of human and financial resources, and knowledge. An important issue for the leading companies is the formation of a common corporate information area, accumulation of intellectual assets, analysis and use of the best practices relating to governance, production and innovations. At present, business is an important component of society. The leading companies are of geostrategic importance, and they have serious influence on Russia's economy and social policies, pay taxes on a regular basis and create new jobs.

Year after year the aims of the national award remain unchanged. They include increasing investment attractiveness of Russian companies; drawing the attention of the Russian public and the world business community to their work; increasing the Russian economy's competitiveness; the country's integration into the global economic system; growth in citizens' well-being.

This year, national business awards were given to laureates in the Theater Hall of the Moscow Music House. The ceremony was anchored by Anton Khrekov and Yulia Rutberg. Mikhail Barshchevsky, a well-known Russian lawyer, representing the Russian government in the Constitutional Court, pointed out that the event was relaxing, and dynamic, there were no delays or excessive pomposity, and at the same time due respect for the laureates was shown. In this difficult time when businesses hear a lot of unfriendly remarks from the government and the people, public recognition is of great psychological importance for the leading Russian companies, Mr. Barshchevsky declared. In his opinion, such awards are more important than even tax discounts.

The anchorpersons at the ceremony were enhancing the atmosphere of the party with their relaxed stance and spontaneous jokes. The ceremony was the first New Year party in Moscow, and the hall was decorated to mark the forthcoming holiday.

The laureates wished a happy New Year to the guests. Viktor Gerashchenko wished everyone be in a better condition than that of YUKOS. In the opinion of Arkadiy Dvorkovich, chief of the Expert Department of the President of Russia, the Company of the Year award, founded by RBC, allows companies to have their business independently evaluated and to understand a company's mistakes and its position with regard to competitors. Gazprom-Media General Director Nikolay Senkevich voiced the opinion that there was a growing number of respected people, companies, persons and events that need both inside and outside recognition. In Senkevich's view, the Company of the Year award has gained an excellent reputation, and it is one of the five most prominent awards of this kind.

All laureates remarked on the importance of the award in terms of public recognition of business. Vladimir Dorokhov, the financial director of STS-Logistics, believes that the award enhances the status of a laureate and simplifies making deals with potential clients. Alyona Melnikova, the vice president for conceptual development of Residences Benelux, pointed out that the award meant fulfillment of ambitions, and it gave a good incentive for further intensive and extensive growth of a company. Charles Ryan, chairman of United Financial Group, is pleased that the brand name of the National Award, created by RBC, facilitates real competition, and he thinks it is a great pride to win such a contest.

The awarding ceremony was conservative (in a good sense of this word) but it had a distinguishing feature this year. A representative of each prizewinner who appeared at the stage had to take a brush to draw something on a huge white sheet, so as to make some personal mark on the general picture symbolizing the unity of business and its future. Interestingly, serious people behaved like babies for some time, and their paintings were spontaneous and frank. The final picture turned out quite curious as a painting.

In interviews with the media in the lobby, many well-known people directly or indirectly voiced their concerns about the future of Russian business, which is facing a difficult time in modern Russia. Yulia Rutberg found a good way to express this general anxiety. She said, "I would very much like this people to flourish, so that nobody put obstacles in their way. And our country would then become strong due to this. There are a lot of smart and talented people in our country, and it is most important that their hands remain untied. The main thing is to avoid a police state."

The ceremony was sponsored by Johnnie Walker, the world's No.1 whisky producer. The company founded a prize for "Inexorable Movement Forward," reflecting Johnnie Walker's spirit and ideology.
