Ukraine passes law on PM appointment procedure

RBC, 07.10.2010, Kiev 13:57:32.The power to appoint a Ukrainian prime minister has been transferred from the parliament to the president. The corresponding law was passed by 252 deputies. According to the document, the PM will be appointed by the president, subject to the approval of more than half of the parliament's members. Furthermore, deputy prime ministers and ministers will also be appointed by the country's leader on the basis of the PM's suggestions.

Justice Minister Alexander Lavrinovich explained that the new law did not mean that the president of Ukraine would monopolize executive power, noting that a candidate would also require support from the parliament in order to have a chance of being appointed PM.
