Middle East mediators urge talks between Israel, Palestine
RBC, 18.03.2010, Moscow 16:21:59.The Middle East Quartet of mediators are determined to help Israel and Palestine resume talks, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated at a joint press conference with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in Moscow. "I am fully confident that participants of the conference are determined to pass a document clarifying their positions, which reflect the previous decisions of the global community regarding the terms and parameters of direct talks between Palestinians and Israelis, and also ensure that our principles are implemented," Lavrov said. He also expressed hope that Israel and Palestine's reaction would be constructive. The minister is wary of making any forecasts about the efficiency of the Quartet's upcoming meeting, however. Ban Ki-moon, in turn, asserted that since there was no alternative to direct Arab-Israeli talks, the parties must start a dialog. He went on to note that he was scheduled to visit Israel and meet with the Palestinian authorities, and also pay a visit to the Gaza Strip in order to urge the parties to sit down to talks.
