Russia not to send troops to Afghanistan
RBC, 09.02.2010, Moscow 16:51:54.Chief of the Russian Security Council Nikolai Patrushev has denied suggestions that Russian troops may be sent to Afghanistan to support international missions in the country. He made this statement during a press briefing. "We do not plan to have our troops participate in any campaigns in Afghanistan, and the reasons for this should be very obvious," he explained. "The Soviet Union already sent its troops to this country, and we have had enough there," the Mayak radio station reported, citing Patrushev. At the same time, the official stressed that Russia was not refusing to provide help to Afghanistan. "We are prepared to participate in the training of troops and policemen, and in economic projects that will be sponsored by international organizations," Patrushev stated. He indicated that Russia was interested in stability in Afghanistan.
