Russia's trade surplus slumps in 2009

      RBC, 08.02.2010, Moscow 13:02:38.Russia's trade surplus amounted to $134.3bn in 2009, $66.2bn or 33 percent less than in the previous year, the Federal Customs Service reported today. At the same time, surplus in trade with countries outside the CIS stood at $109.3bn, down $58.1bn, and with CIS at $25bn, down $8bn.

      Russia's foreign trade amounted to $469bn in 2009 (including data on trade with Belarus), which is 36.2 percent less than in 2008. Trade with countries outside the CIS dropped 36.3 percent to $400.5bn, and with the CIS slumped 35.5 percent to $68.5bn.

      Russia's exports equaled $301.6bn, down 35.5 percent from 2008. Among the top exported products were fuel and energy products, which accounted to 69.5 percent of total exports. Meanwhile, imports stood at $167.4bn, down 37.3 percent from a year earlier.

      The European Union was Russia's largest economic partner, accounting for 50.3 percent of Russia's trade. The CIS's share stood at 14.6 percent and APEC member countries' share was 20.7 percent.
