Russia to cut carbon emissions 25% by 2020
RBC, 19.11.2009, Moscow 11:21:58.Russia has taken on the responsibility of reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 25 percent by 2020 compared to 1990 instead of the originally planned 15 percent. According to a source close to the Russian delegation, such an agreement was reached during the Russia-EU summit in Stockholm. The source added that during the meeting with European partners, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced Russia's intent to fulfill these obligations with the help of a 40-percent increase in energy efficient technologies in the Russian economy in the next 10 years. Earlier, Russian authorities were ready to agree to a reduction between 10 and 15 percent. Meanwhile, the EU member states are poised to cut their carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2020, but only if countries accounting for the maximum emissions agree to cut their emissions.
