Putin: Ukraine may have difficulties paying for gas
RBC, 30.10.2009, Moscow 15:59:42.Ukraine may experience problems with payments for energy supplies, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said during today's meeting with the leaders of the United Russia political party after his telephone conversation with Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko. He pointed out that Ukraine had not received any money from the European Union, and the organization had refused to hold any discussions on the matter. He also noted the International Monetary Fund's announcement that Ukraine's economic policy was ruinous. The prime minister indicated that Ukraine indeed had the money, stating that its gold and currency reserves stood at $27bn-$28bn, whereas the minimum amount of money required to support the national currency's stability was $12bn. With this in mind, Putin said that the IMF believed Ukraine was fully capable of paying for Russian gas. At the same time, Putin said - citing Timoshenko - that Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko was hindering cooperation between the government and the Central Bank and blocking the transfer of money. "What do we do next?" Putin asked his colleagues, noting that he would discuss the matter with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in the near future.
