Russia's unemployment rate creeping up menacingly
RBC, 19.03.2009, Moscow 19:10:00.Russia's total number of unemployed jumped 20.6 percent in February 2009 year-on-year, to over 6.4 million people (8.5 percent of the economically active population), the Federal State Statistics Service said today. This also shows a 4.9-percent increase from January 2009. Some 2 million people registered with public employment services, 1.7 million of which were granted unemployment benefits. Russia's economically active population stood at 75.6 million people, or over 53 percent of the total. Most working Russians are employed in organizations other than small businesses (36.3 million, or 52.2 percent of all working Russians).
