Moscow calls U.S. human rights reports on Russia biased
RBC, 26.01.2009, Moscow 15:04:45.Certain parts of the international non-governmental organization Human Rights Watch's annual report on global human rights for 2008 are biased and one-sided, the Russian Foreign Ministry's information and press department said in a statement today. For instance, certain countries where discrimination against national minorities has taken place for many years and human rights have been systematically violated are not mentioned at all in the report. In the section dedicated to Russia, however, exaggerations, a biased selection of facts to support preconceived conclusions, arbitrary interpretation of facts, and other ruses are used. These tricks pursue the obvious goal of creating a negative image of the human rights situation in Russia in the eyes of the readers and public opinion. The ministry was even more critical of a similar report by the U.S.-based Freedom House, noting that its financial sources were no secret to anyone. "He who pays the piper calls the tune," the ministry concluded.
