Russia hikes import duties on used cars

RBC, 12.01.2009, Moscow 13:23:06.In accordance with amendments to Russia's customs code and custom tariffs taking effect today, it will now be more expensive to import vehicles to Russia, as customs duties on cars and trucks have risen 5 percentage points, from 25 to 30 percent. Simultaneously, the age of "used cars" was raised from seven to five years, and the duties on such cars nearly doubled. However, the duties will only continue for nine months. The Russian car industry has actually become the first one to receive government support under the new anti-crisis plan. The Industry and Trade Ministry said the changes were specifically tailored to protect Russian carmakers, including foreign car producers that have launched assembly plants in Russia on preferential terms such as Fiat, Volkswagen, Peugeot, Cetroen and Toyota. Experts believe the rise in import duties will make prices for used cars comparable to those for the output of foreign concerns in Russia.
