EU not to act as mediator for Russia, Ukraine
RBC, 07.01.2009, Moscow 17:19:30.No talks on the gas problem between Russia, Ukraine and the European Union (EU) have been scheduled for Thursday, the Echo of Moscow radio station cited Russia's permanent representative to the EU Vladimir Chizhov as saying today. He reiterated that the European Parliament was expected to hold a special hearing on Russian gas transit through the territory of Ukraine. Chizhov, however, did not rule out the possibility of Ukrainian officials attending the meeting, stressing that this could not be viewed as EU acting as a mediator between Moscow and Kiev. Gazprom's CEO Alexei Miller is projected to make an appearance during the hearings, informing the European Parliament's deputies on the current situation regarding natural gas supplies to European consumers.
