Gazprom further cuts gas supplies via Ukraine
RBC, 07.01.2009, Moscow 12:07:22.Gazprom has further reduced natural gas supplies to the Russian-Ukrainian border by another 21m cubic meters, official spokesman for the Russian energy giant Sergei Kupriyanov told journalists today. He pointed out that this was precisely the amount of gas Ukraine had siphoned off over the past 24 hours. Kupriyanov reiterated that the amount of gas, aimed for transit and siphoned off by Naftogaz of Ukraine since the beginning of the year, had not been returned to the company or European consumers. He pointed out that Kiev justified its actions by saying that it was merely taking technological gas. With this in mind, Gazprom had nothing else to do, but to cut gas supplies by the same amount, the Vesti TV channel reported Kupriyanov as saying today. Gazprom indicates that the deepening crisis has already seriously affected many European countries. Gas deliveries to Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Turkey and Macedonia have been altogether halted, while supplies to Romania, the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and Poland have been significantly decreased.
