Russia announces S. Ossetia, Abkhazia friendship laws
RBC, 24.11.2008, Moscow 16:31:42.Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has signed into law federal bills ratifying friendship, cooperation, and mutual assistance pacts between Russia and Abkhazia and Russia and South Ossetia, the presidential press office reported. Both documents were adopted by the State Duma on October 29 and approved by the Federation Council on November 12. The laws stipulate the parties' obligations to provide assistance to each other if either of them comes under attack, joint protection of Abkhazia and South Ossetia's borders, as well as cooperation on a wide range of economic, social, and humanitarian issues. The parties will jointly counter organized crime, international terrorism, and drug trafficking. The documents were signed for 10 years and may be extended automatically.
