Russia's population still shrinking
RBC, 21.11.2008, Moscow 16:42:16.Russia's resident population stood at 141.9m people as of October 1, 2008, down 116,600 people, or 0.08 percent, from the beginning of the year, the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) reported today. In comparison, the population fell by 199,900 people, or 0.14 percent, between January and September 2007. This year's decrease can be linked to a natural population decline, although the latter slowed by 80,000 people in January-September 2008 against the same period a year earlier. The population loss was partially offset by a 61-percent rise in immigration rates.
