Russian submarine accident blamed on fire system malfunction

RBC, 10.11.2008, Moscow 09:33:41.The accident on Russia's nuclear-powered submarine Nerpa that killed 20 people on Saturday, November 8 is blamed on a malfunction of the vessel's fire system. According to the Vesti channel, the preliminary findings determining the cause have been released by the special investigation commission led by Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Vladimir Vysotsky.

Nothing, however, has yet been said about what could have triggered the fire system. November 10 has been declared a day of morning in the Primorsky region, and Komsomolsk-on-Amur will mourn the dead tomorrow, on November 11.

The fire system on the submarine went off during a test-run, releasing the freon gas and suffocating 20 people, including sailors and shipbuilders. 21 more people were injured. The submarine's nuclear reactor, however, was undamaged.
