Share of spam emails on Russian internet rises

      RBC, 14.10.2008, Moscow 19:48:56.The percentage of spam in Russia's mail traffic rose 1.9 percent to an average of 82.2 percent in September 2008 compared to a month earlier, the Russian antivirus software developer Kaspersky Lab said in its spam statistics study. The lowest percentage recorded in the month under review was 71.6 percent on September 15, while it peaked at 95 percent on September 13. The share of spam with pictures attached remained unchanged compared to previous months, at 9 percent.

      A total of 1.09 percent of all emails contained malware, 3 percent more than a month earlier. Links to phishing websites were in 0.62 percent of all electronic messages. The payment system PayPal and internet auction eBay were hit the hardest by phishing attacks, with the companies respective shares at 36 and 18 percent. Russian phishing attacks were targeted mainly against the user of the popular email systems Mail.ru and Rambler, as well as the Yandex.Dengi payment system. The five leading spam categories in September were adult content (28 percent), medication and health-related goods and services (19 percent), education (12 percent), fake designer goods (6 percent), and travel and tourism (6 percent).
