Transnistria worried about Moldova's economic levers
RBC, 10.10.2008, Tiraspol 10:46:57.The Transnistrian leadership is concerned over Moldova's build-up of opportunities for putting economic pressure on the republic, Transnistria's President Igor Smirnov said during a meeting with the European Union's special representative for Moldova Kalman Mizsei. The meeting was dedicated to the settlement of the Moldova-Transnistria conflict. Smirnov noted that Moldova's government had issued a decree impeding food imports to Transnistria, except for those from Moldova. Such a move may fuel another surge in imported inflation, Smirnov pointed out, which raises doubts over the trust measures touted by Moldova's President Vladimir Voronin, and could even result in an escalation of the conflict. In turn, Mizsei stressed that the EU was ready to do everything possible to promote trust between Moldova and Transnistria.
