Uzbekistan seeks to expand economic ties with Russia
RBC, 02.09.2008, Tashkent 11:29:27.Uzbekistan expects to increase the number of joint investment projects with Russia, Uzbek Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyoyev said during talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin today. He noted that regular intergovernmental meetings were likely to boost bilateral trade considerably and increase the number of successful investment projects. During today's talks, new areas of cooperation that could diversify the two countries' economic relations were discussed, Mirziyoyev stated. In turn, Putin agreed that Russian-Uzbek economic ties needed to be diversified into other sectors than the energy, oil and gas industries. The two parties intend to sign a plan of action for the implementation of a bilateral economic cooperation program for 2008-2012. Among other things, the document provides for cooperation in the healthcare and hi-tech sectors. Putin is also expected to meet with Uzbek President Islom Karimov today.
