Russia calls on Georgia to maintain diplomatic ties
RBC, 29.08.2008, Moscow 18:39:08.Russia does not want to sever diplomatic ties with Georgia, spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry Andrei Nesterenko told a briefing today. The fact that the Georgian parliament has called on the country's leadership to cut diplomatic relations with Russia shows that Georgia is not yet ready to draw lessons from what has happened, Nesterenko said. The parliament's statement does not even mention the destruction inflicted on South Ossetia and civilian deaths that took place there, the Russian official pointed out. Nesterenko also said he regretted that the Georgian Foreign Ministry had made a decision to recall diplomatic staff from Moscow. Under the circumstances, it is paramount to maintain working relations, particularly in order to resolve humanitarian issues, Nesterenko said. If diplomatic ties are severed, Russia will not be responsible for this, he stressed.
