Russian Foreign Ministry denounces false US allegations
RBC, 13.08.2008, Moscow 15:33:13.Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has condemned a statement made by Matt Bryza, a representative of the US Department of State, alleging Russia's aggression in the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict zone. Lavrov stated that Russia could not "countenance the efforts to misrepresent the situation and turn it upside down," and resented allegations that it had ceased to be a peacekeeper. Lavrov said that apparently the reason behind Bryza's statements was that the France-brokered five-point plan had nothing of the kind in it and, conversely, stressed Russia's peacekeeping role. In addition, Lavrov defined the view that the operation had been terminated at US President George Bush's demand as fundamentally wrong, stressing that the Russian authorities made the decision because the aims of the operation had been achieved.
