Georgia ceases fire unilaterally
RBC, 07.08.2008, Tbilisi 19:29:29.Georgia has announced that is was planning to temporarily cease fire in the Georgian-Ossetian conflict zone, Georgia's State Minister for Reintegration Temur Iakobashvili told journalists today. He pointed out that it was Tbilisi's unilateral decision. Iakobashvili noted that he had returned from Tskhinvali, South Ossetia, where he had held talks with the head of the Russian peacekeeping mission Marat Kulakhmetov. As a result of the talks, Georgia's authorities will attempt to convince South Ossetian authorities that further escalation of the conflict could result in a large number of casualties. Meanwhile, South Ossetia insists that Georgia initiated the fighting by shelling villages near the border.
