Russian officials admit growing gap between rich and poor
RBC, 26.03.2008, Moscow 12:35:29.The number of dollar billionaires in Russia is not in line with the country's economic development, Chairman of the Audit Chamber Sergei Stepashin said during a conference in Moscow today. He pointed out that over the past eight years the number of dollar billionaires went up from just a few people to over a hundred, placing Russia in second place after the US. However, Stepashin noted that the second place contradicted the country's current state of economy. Stepashin added that Russia was seeing an increase in the difference between the rich and the poor. According to the Federal State Statistics Service, the difference in incomes between 10 percent of Russia's richest people and 10 percent of the poorest people rose from 13.9 times in 2000 to 15.3 times in 2006. Therefore, the official believes that the government should work our an effective incomes policy.
