Voter turnout during presidential election at 69.65%

      RBC, 03.03.2008, Moscow 11:07:42.As of 10 a.m. Moscow time, voter turnout during the presidential election stood at 69.65 percent in Russia, Chairman of the Central Election Commission Vladimir Churov told journalists. He pointed out that the figure was rather high and exceeded those of the previous elections.

      Churov noted that the highest number of votes were cast in the Republic of Mordovia, where 92.89 percent of the voting-eligible population came to polling stations. Turnout exceeded 90 percent in the following regions: Ingushetia (92.32 percent), Karachaevo-Cherkessia (92.2 percent), the Yamalo-Nenetsk Autonomous Area (91.98 percent), and the Chechen Republic (91.2 percent), as well as in Dagestan and Bashkiria.

      Compared to the previous presidential election in 2004, voter turnout surged 20 percent in the Krasnodar region, according to Churov. First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev received the highest number of votes in Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachaevo-Cherkessia, the Chukotka Autonomous Area, the Tyva Republic, Bashkiria, and the Yamalo-Nenetsk Autonomous Area.
