Russia's parliament declares Georgia anti-democratic
RBC, 02.10.2007, Moscow 11:54:15.Russia's State Duma has made an official statement regarding the anti-democratic policy of Georgia's government and the violation of human rights within the country. Deputies have also expressed their concern over the US support of the suppression of the Georgian opposition. Russia's ties with Georgia have been strained, as the latter claims that Russian peace-makers have been intervening in the republic's internal affairs. Moreover, the political instability has hampered finding a solution to Georgia's conflicts with Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Russian parliament members believe that anti-democratic policies adopted by Georgian leaders could have a negative effect on Georgia's economy, as well as on the overall political situation in the Caucasian region, jeopardizing Russia's strategic interests.
