Booming tobacco consumption concerns Russian politicians

RBC, 28.05.2007, Moscow 15:57:37.Tobacco consumption increased by 100 percent to 2,500 cigarettes per person annually in Russia over the past ten years. Meanwhile, cigarette consumption grew a mere 3 percent in the world at large over the same period. This data was provided at the first Russian national forum "Health or Tobacco" in Moscow today. State Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov told the forum that some 52 percent of all oncological diseases in Russia were smoking-related. Cigarette prices are inadmissibly low today, being comparable to the price of ice cream, Gryzlov pointed out.

A ban on tobacco sales within 100 meters of schools and medical institutions will be imposed soon, he added. The Duma speaker also stressed the need to prohibit smoking in public places.

Forum participants expressed a desire to address the Russian government with a proposal to develop a federal program for restricting smoking and to at least double tobacco excise rates until 2010.
