Russia facing depopulation

      RBC, 22.05.2007, Moscow 19:43:33.Russia's resident population dropped 0.08 percent or 118,000 people in January-March 2007 reaching 142.1m people as of April 1, 2007. In the same period in 2006, the country's population decreased by 0.14 percent or 200,800 people, the Federal State Statistics Service reports. Depopulation was due to natural loss, which has become lower. A 28.9 percent rise in immigration compensated for the part of the loss.

      Births increased in number in the first quarter of 2007, while mortality decreased somewhat. In general, the death rate exceeded the birth rate by 1.4 times in Russia (down from 1.7 times a year earlier).

      Migration increased by 11.7 percent or 46,200 people, and Russia received 15,700 immigrants, or 48.7 percent, more than last year. Emigration decreased by 1,000 people, or 9.4 percent.
