Kazakhstan sees 21.5% rise in uranium output
RBC, 07.02.2007, Astana 19:58:31.In 2006, Kazakhstan boosted uranium production 21.5 percent to 5,280 tonnes against 4,346 tonnes in 2005. The total output includes a contribution from Kazakhstan's national nuclear corporation Kazatomprom worth 3,124 tonnes. The company aims at raising uranium production to 15,000 tonnes a year by 2010, which will make Kazakhstan the world leader. Kazatomprom projects to mine some 6,937 tonnes in 2007. Experts have repeatedly referred to Kazatomprom as the most ambitious company in this sector. The company has taken up projects that may be fraught with drastic changes for the global uranium market. The plans to enlarge output by 2010 are but the first stage of a long-term development strategy involving comprehensive development of all of the country's resources. Kazatomprom is 100 percent owned by the Kazakhstani government.
