Poll shows Russian attitude to North Korea nuclear weapons

RBC, 03.11.2006, Moscow 15:38:20.About 41 percent of Russians think North Korea's nuclear weapons threaten Russia's national interests. At the same time 44 percent of those polled don't feel threatened. The poll was conducted by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) to determine which countries Russians think are threatened by North Korea and what kind of policy Russia should have towards countries developing nuclear weapons.

A considerable number of Russians (41 percent) could not say for definite which countries North Korea's nuclear weapons are aimed at. Others think it might be the USA (29 percent), Russia (9 percent), Japan (7 percent), China (5 percent), or South Korea (4 percent). 18 percent of the population think they are not a threat to anyone.

Almost half of the respondents think that Russia and other leading countries, including those that possess nuclear weapons, should have a tough policy on countries developing nuclear weapons. A third of the population (34 percent) feels that new countries have the same rights as "the nuclear club" and there is no need for a special policy.

Most Russians (56 percent) don't believe there is a nuclear threat against their country, considering the use of nuclear weapons against Russia very unlikely (13 percent) or quite unlikely (43 percent). However, a third of the respondents (34 percent) concede such an attack is possible. Those who do find a nuclear attack likely think it will come from the USA (37 percent) rather than North Korea. Russians feel most threatened by terrorist organizations, such as Al Qaeda (27 percent) and Chechen terrorists (44 percent).

The nationwide poll was held on October 28-29, 2006 among 1,592 people in 153 cities in 46 Russian regions. The statistical error does not exceed 3.4 percent.
