Ukrainian leader insists on signing gas protocol with Russia

RBC, 26.10.2006, Kiev 12:01:22.Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko considers it necessary to sign a bilateral intergovernmental protocol between Ukraine and Russia in accordance with the stipulations of a related accord between the two countries. On Wednesday, Yushchenko discussed the results of signing natural gas contracts for 2006-2007 with Deputy PM Andrei Klyuyev, Fuel and Energy Minister Yuri Boyko, and Neftegaz Ukrainy executives, the presidential press office told RBC. During the meeting, he raised such issues as Gazprom's role in gas supplies, the exact type of gas that would be delivered to Ukraine in 2007, and the procedure for calculating transit rates for Gazprom.

Yushchenko believes that the price of gas and gas relations cannot be in any way connected to any geopolitical issues, such as joining NATO or the WTO. The leader stressed the need for establishing a gas transportation consortium and the importance of creating it on solely transparent terms with the participation of the European Union, Ukraine, and Russia.
