Ukraine rejects possibility of gas transit failures

RBC, 29.08.2006, Kiev 13:56:21.The Ukrainian Fuel and Energy Ministry cited Minister Yury Boyko as saying that European gas consumers and Russian gas owners would not be faced with gas supply troubles. He added that Ukraine has developed a reliable reputation as a gas transit country over the years since its independence.

Furthermore, the minister asserted that Ukraine had complied with the schedule of delivering gas to underground gas storage facilities. According to him, if the current pace is maintained, Ukraine will secure 24.7bn cubic meters of gas, the reserves required for the heating season. At this point, some 130m cubic meters of gas are being pumped to the facilities daily, which means that the required amount will have been reached by October 15, 2006.

As reported earlier, EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs said he was deeply concerned over possible failures in gas delivery to Europe via Ukraine because of damage to the gas transportation system, and linked it to insufficient reserves in Ukraine's underground storages.
