Moldova supplies tobacco to Russia through third countries
RBC, 28.07.2006, Chisinau 12:36:27.Since Russia's ban on imports of plant products from Moldova, imposed in May 2006, the republic has been supplying tobacco to Russia through third countries, a source in Moldovan tobacco company Moldova-Tutun told RBC. The source did not name the countries, but said that Moldova intended to supply some 3,000 tonnes of tobacco to Russia this year. The total of Moldovan tobacco exports is expected at 6,300 tonnes. Previously Russia accounted for 65-70 percent of Moldovan tobacco exports. Moldova plans to export tobacco from both old and new harvests this year, as it intends to gather 5,000 tonnes of tobacco leaves in 2006, which is 3,000 tonnes less than in 2005. Some 1,500 tonnes will be supplied to Ukraine and another 80 kilograms to Belarus, compared to 2,000 tonnes and 600 kilograms respectively, supplied in 2005.
