Some 40% of Russians think NATO poses threat to Russia, polls show
RBC, 25.05.2006, Moscow 11:16:53.Some 40 percent of Russians think NATO poses a threat to Russia, a poll carried out by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center shows. 34 percent of respondents are of the opposite opinion. According to the poll results, 35 percent of Russians consider Russia to be the Alliance's non-member partner, while 27 percent believe Russia is the Alliance's opponent. Some respondents (9 percent) believe Russia to be a member of NATO, especially young people aged 18-24 (14 percent). Russians have an ambiguous understanding of NATO's mission, the poll shows. 26 percent of the people polled believe that the Alliance's mission is to defend and promote the interests of the US in the international arena, 24 percent think that NATO is fighting against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, 21 percent of respondents are positive that the Alliance's mission is to carry out aggressive military action against other countries; 21 percent believe that NATO is fighting the drug industry and organized crime. Only 17 percent of Russians consider NATO's mission to be carrying out peacekeeping operations and 13 percent - exchanging military experience and technology with other countries.
