Russian President gearing up for Russia-EU summit
RBC, 04.10.2005, Moscow 09:53:10.President of Russia Vladimir Putin will take part in the Russia-EU summit in London today. Putin arrived in London yesterday. Prime Minister of Great Britain Tony Blair, and chiefs of other states and governments, as well as Manuel Barroso, head of the European Commission, EU Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner, and EU Trade Commissioner Peter Mandelson are expected to attend the summit. Observers say that although Russia and the EU are still at a disagreement over a number of issues like Iran's nuclear program, the situation is now favorable for the Russian-EU cooperation to improve. Europe is experiencing energy shortage, while Russia is in an excellent position to provide energy supplies. Estimates show that in the coming 15 years, the EU's demand for natural gas may rise by 50 percent. Struggle against terrorism will become another item on the summit's agenda.
