Khodorkovsky confirms his intended nomination for State Duma
RBC, 01.09.2005, Moscow 19:27:22.Mikhail Khodorkovsky has confirmed his intention voiced yesterday to run for the State Duma. He believes in parliamentarian means of struggling, and thinks that one can and must win elections in Russia, another statement circulated by his lawyer Anton Drel indicates. Former YUKOS' chief Mikhail Khodorkovsky, condemned to 9 years in prison by Moscow's Meshchansky court, decided to run for the State Duma in Moscow in University constituency No. 201. His statement posted on his website on August 31 read that he was not struggling for a deputy's office, but for the right of every Russian to learn that the current regime had exhausted itself and was nearing its collapse. He also thanked all Russia's regions and electorate who showed their readiness to propose him for the State Duma and regional parliaments. Khodorkovsky's sentence will only take effect after the Moscow City Court has examined his appeal. The trial is due to begin on September 14.
