Russia to obtain military base in Tajikistan by winter 2005
RBC, 24.06.2005, Dushanbe 13:47:13.The 201st Russian motor rifle division stationed in Tajikistan is to be granted the status of a military base in autumn 2005, Russia's defense minister Sergey Ivanov has stated at the meeting of the CIS council of defense ministers in Dushanbe. Ivanov noted that it was planned to sign the respective agreement today. The minister emphasized that the objectives and the personnel for the base had already been approved, and the base was already being fitted out. According to Ivanov, Russia is making a considerable investment into the base, specifically, into capital construction and re-equipment, for it clearly understands in what region the base is located, and what tasks it will have to perform, including cooperation with the defense ministry and Tajikistani border guards.
