Ukrainian PM asks investors to help Ukraine

RBC, 17.06.2005, Kiev 19:34:06.Speaking at an international economic forum in Kiev, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko has suggested that investors make investments in the country's fuel and energy industries, so that the country could gain independence from energy supplies from Russia. She remarked that Ukraine received 90 percent of oil, 60 percent and 100 percent of fuel for nuclear power plants from Russia.

"We appreciate partner relations with Russia, and we are ready to build strategic cooperation with it, but energy independence is a national priority for Ukraine," the Prime Minister said. She noted that the government would do its best to resolve the problem of independence from Russia's energy supplies within the next few years. Therefore, Ukraine's priorities will include reconstruction and modernization of thermoelectric power plants, which should use coal as their main fuel.

As for other important projects, the Prime Minister referred to the development of uranium and zirconium ore deposits. This would allow the development of projects of making fuel for nuclear power plants. In Timoshenko's opinion, if Ukraine pursued a correct policy, nuclear energy could guarantee complete independence from foreign energy supplies for that country.

The Prime Minister noted that the project of extending Ukraine's Odessa-Brody pipeline to Poland was still under consideration. She is convinced that Ukraine would continue to build new oil refineries with the use of new technologies. Timoshenko also mentioned natural gas transportation projects, which have great potential for investments.
