Russia likely to enter WTO in late 2005
RBC, 22.02.2005, Moscow 11:51:56.Another round of Russia's WTO talks held last week was successful, and the Russian delegation returned to Moscow in high spirits, the Vremya Novostei newspaper has reported. Although the WTO's principles imply that until all issues are settled, nothing can be deemed settled, almost nobody doubts that the talks will be completed at the ministerial conference in Hong Kong expected in December 2005, since Russia has had more than a decade to prepare. At the present stage, the commitments that Russia has to take on, after becoming a member of the WTO, are being worked out. More importantly, major participants in the negotiations are well disposed towards Russia. On February 12, George Bush declared that the US backed Russia's entry, so long as Russia adhered to the principles of democracy. However, some countries do not share the US's optimism: as a rule, these are countries historically related to Russia, like Georgia. Recently, Poland has stated it would be against Russian entry until Ukraine became a WTO member.
