OSCE observers on Ukrainian presidential elections
RBC, 01.11.2004, Kiev 17:45:35.The presidential elections held in Ukraine did not meet the standards of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Council of Europe and other European standards appropriate for free democratic elections, OSCE observers said in their preliminary statement after the first round of presidential elections. OSCE observers joined the international mission of monitors, which consisted of 600 people. OSCE observers reported such violations as propaganda during the elections, biased position in state-run mass media's highlighting the event, influence exercised by the Ukrainian government to support incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich. However, OSCE observers pointed out to a high turnout, which they consider to be a positive factor reflecting the evolution of democratic principles in Ukraine.
