Georgian official on incident with peacekeepers
RBC, 08.07.2004, Tbilisi 10:45:47.The seizure of Georgian servicemen by Ossetian militiamen is a provocation and Tbilisi can take adequate measures in response to it but Georgia does not want a military operation to be launched, Georgian State Minister for Separatist Conflicts Georgy Khaindrava told journalists today. According to him, gunmen captured 50 Georgian servicemen. There are 500 Georgian peacekeepers in the conflict zone and they will be able to protect Georgian people. Due to the capture of servicemen, people in Georgian villages started panicking and asking authorities to give them weapons, Khaindrava reported. The minister declared that Georgian authorities would not hand out weapons to civilians.
