Russia to participate in Proliferation Security Initiative
RBC, 31.05.2004, Moscow 18:54:54.Russia has announced itself as a country participating in the Proliferation Security Initiative, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced. The Russian delegation took part in a meeting of the core group of the PSI in Krakow today. The PSI core group consists of 15 countries. 60 more countries are going to contribute the Proliferation Security Initiative. The PSI is a multinational response to the challenge posed by the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), their delivery systems, and related materials worldwide. The proliferation of WMDs is a global threat and thus it mist be countered globally. "We believe that this effort needs international cooperation to become efficient," the ministry stressed in its release. Moscow considers the PSI to be an additional mechanism and not a threat to the existing instruments of countering the proliferation of WMDs.
