Saakashvili offers security guarantees to Adzhar leader
RBC, 05.05.2004, Tbilisi 19:57:20.Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has made a special statement devoted to the fate of Adzhar leader Aslan Abashidze. "In order to rule out any bloodshed, I am ready to offer all kinds of security guarantees to Aslan Abashidze and his family both in Georgia and outside it," the President declared. According to Saakashvili, he had spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin twice and has talked with representatives of the White House. "Russia is ready to consider the possibility of giving political asylum to Abashidze," Saakashvili pointed out. "We will never demand his extradition to Georgia, although he has committed numerous crimes," the Georgian President underlined. He added that these security guarantees would be valid on the condition that Abashidze resigns voluntarily. The President is also ready to give security guarantees to the Adzhar interior minister and the Adzhar state security minister. "We are even ready to pass the respective laws in this connection," Saakashvili said. The Georgian President will directly rule Adzharia during the transitional period, and a temporary board will be formed before a new government is elected in this autonomous republic, Saakashvili pointed out.
